VICTORIA. The Argus of the Ist December says :—: — There lias been little show of busiuess in the import markets, the day having been kept by a number of mercantile films as an eutire holiday, and towards the afternoon almost all the offices were closed. In breadstuff's I there has been little doing; the feeling in the | market, however, is one of greater firmness, notwithstanding that Californian advices are not so favorable, the three cargoes advised as coming forward to Sydney and Melbourne not having been expected. For bnst brands of Victorian flour, we quote" to-day £14 10s, and trade parcels have been disposed of at £14 to £14 10s. Oats are in fair request. We note sales of New Zealand, a very prime sample, at 3s 9d to 3s 9jd. Maize is likewise moved of freely, at 4s 4£d in quantity, to 4s 5d and 4s 6d for smaller parcels. Candles continue to fiud buyers at up to 1 1 Ad for best brands. The only feature of consequence in the day's transaction was the auction sale of the Alexandra's cargo of Maoritius svgar — 8434 bags were offered, and the whole cargo, to within 1000 bags, was rapidly cleared off at prices sustaining late sale'srates. An offer had also been made for the parcel withdrawn, and it was expected the lot would be cleared off before the day was over. Rations brought 26s 6d ; browns, 31s to 31s 6d ; low yellows, 32s 3d ; middling ycllows33s 9d to 35s ; good to finest grainy yellow crystals realised 35s 6rl to 37s 6d, aud low middling white crystals, 37s 9d to 38s. A line of common Patua rice baa been placed at £16. Since the auctiou sale of caustic soda at £18 10s, great difficulty is experienced in making Bales."
