SYDNEY.

Thursday, Aagust 29. The Volunteer Bill has passed, the Assembly. Mr Parkes moved the second reading of the Federal Council Bill. Mr Forster proposed, as an amendment, that the second reading be taken six months hence. The bill was read a second time by a large majority. The House, however, was counted out in committee on the bill. Mr Parkes stated that the Victorian Government had not answered his letter,and that he therefore considered that they acquiesced in his views. At auction, Eaven twist, damaged, brought from lOd to lid. The wool sales to-day were very brisk. About 130 bales were sold. Scoured brought 13d to 18d ; skin wool, 14d to 17M; greasy, 5d io 7^d. Sheepskins are active at 6d to 7f d.

Trade is dull. Breadstuff's are depressed. Sales of Java dressed rice have been made at L 24 10s to L 25 per ton.

The Hunter Eiver steam company have declared a dividend of ten per cent. The arrangement between the insurance companies for a higher tariff has broken through, and the low rates have been resumed.

About forty steamers are promised to the Government to meet Prince Alfred outside the Heads.

The Rifle Association's annual meeting takes place between the 6th and the 9th of November. If he is here, Prince Alfred is likely to present the prizes. Arrived. — Strathnaver, from London ; Lota, from Shanghai ; Summer Cloud, from Adelaide.

Friday, August 30. There is little outright betting on the races, excepting on the Port Phillip Stakes. LIOOO was invested on Fishhook at two to one. Bylong has been scratched for all his engagements. The latest betting is :—: — Seagull and Hambleton Hill, 5 to 4 ; Emerald and Sir John, 5 to.l. For the Derby there are offers to back Little Fish against Fireworks. Both are quoted at 6 to 4 ; Vanderdecken, sto 1 ; and Glencoe, 6to 1. For the Maiden Plate-Old England, 2 to 1 ; Glencoe, Fireworks, and Little Fish, 4to 1. For the Metropolitan — Yattcnden, sto 1 ; Whiiflcr and Seagull, 100 to 12. Token has been scratched for the Derby. Two immense whales, valued at LIOOO, have been caught at Twofold Bay. The ship which arrived here last night was the Alexander Duthie, seventy-eight days out from London. At a large meeting held on the subject, it has been decided to raise a testimonial to the Governor. An influential committee was appointed to collect subscriptions, which are limited to L 2 2s.

The escorts have brought down 52840z5. of gold.

The shipStrathdon takes 33,000 bushels of wheat for London.

Government has ordered a committee of inquiry into the conduct of the master and the general management of the train-ing-ship Vernon. Sailed. — Sarah, for Melbourne, with 1300 bags of maize. Large quantities of land are being taken up at Brisbane under the system of free selection before survey. The legality of the regulations is freely discussed. Sixteen tons of sugar and twenty-four hhds. of rum from Whisk's plantation have reached the Brisbane market. Saturday, Aug. 31. No business is doing, as the races engross attention. Arrived. — Dundonald and Strathnaver, from London; Eangitara, from Melbourne. This was the opening day of the Eandwick Spring Meeting, and the weather was splendid. His Excellency the Governor was present, but the attendance of the general public was only moderate. Monday, Sep. 2.

Seagull, Old England, and Volunteer have been scratched for all their Eandwick engagements. Kelpie has been sold for 320 guineas. A Chinaman, and woman named Johnson, have been arrested for the murder of a child, the body of which was found in Cleveland paddock. They were afterwards discharged, on proving that the child found -was not theirs.

The police are busily engaged in ridding the streets of juvenile prostitutes. Numbers of them were brought before the Court to-day, and ordered to the Industrial Schools.

The first wool of the new season's clip has arrived from Queensland.

The judges have granted a new trial in Frazer v. Evans, on the ground that the verdict was against the law. It will likely decide that the ownership of bonded goods passes with the transfer of the certificates. The markets are very quiet. The Victorians have entered for the Pigeon Derby. Tuesday, Sept. 3. A meeting of merchants will take place to-morrow, to oppose the continuance of the ad valorem duties after the Act expires at the end of the present year. The Assembly is now debating a motion censuring the Government for suspending a portion of the Stamp Act. Low congous are in active demand. The Judges have decided that Mrs Dickson's death stops the case of Dickson v. Yeomans.

Green has published a letter and a medical certificate, stating that he was drugged before the late race, and he offers a reward of LIOO for the discovery of this shocking offence. Token and Little Fish are scratched for all their Eandwick engagements. There are twenty-six entries for the Pigeon Derby. Wednesday, Sept. 4. The Government intend to give pensions to the families of the pilots who were lately drowned at the Heads, and a gratuity to Mrs Green. The Federal Council Bill has passed the Assembly. The Assembly have decided to adjourn over the races.

At a large meeting of merchants to-day resolutions were adopted declaring that ad valorem duties were injuring the trade and the port. The railway loan debate has been adjourned. Hill won the pigeon championship, Johnstone was second, and Donahue third.

Yattondon is a strong favorite for the Cup, and Tim Whiffler stands next.

Mr Stubbs sold to-day the bulk of the Lucie's cargo of Bourbon sugars. Eations brought L 25 10s to L 29 ; yellow counters, L2O 10s to L 32 ; fine crystals, L 36 10s to L3B 10s ; fine counters, L3sssto L 37 10s.

New Zealand wheat has been sold at 4s s^d net. Large parcels of oilmen's stores have changed hands at full rates. Kerosene is firmer ; small sales have been made at 2s 9d.

Sailed. — Lottery, for Eio Janiero. •The Brisbane Church of England Conference has met. The bishop read an address. The conference then debated on the syhodical action based On the voluntary compact. \ The Korier, from Maiden Island, reports the barque Camilla, for Melbourne, wrecked at Navigator's Islands. The crew had reached Apia. Queensland sugar realised L3O, and rum 3s 2d in bond.

Thursday, Sept. 5. The Privy Council has reserved judgment in Bertrand's case, which lasted two days.

The Forest Eights, from Melbourne, was off Plymouth on the Ist of July. The General Cobb and Celestia were loading lumber at Puget Sound, for Melbourne, at the latest dates.

The Walnut street Theatre, in Philadelphia, has been burned down. Nine firemen were killed and fourteen injured. At the wool sales to-day eighty bales were sold. Scoured brought 20^d ; handwashed, 13ad to 17M; fleece, 16d; greasy, 6d. General business is dull. Three bushrangers of Blue Cap's gang have been captured near Yass. The full Court has given judgment in favor of Sir Wm. Don's backers in the trotting match case. The nags on the Government house, the forts, and the various consulates, were hoisted at half-mast to-day, in mourning for Maximilian.
