The circuiristiitices havo been colnmuuicated to uh by a correspondent, who statos that on liis arrival at the spot on Thursday he fouud the pluco in groat commotion, It appears that a party of eight mon attempted to cross the river in a boat, whioh was quickly toppled ovor by ft heavy surf. Throe of its occupants woro drowned, nnd tho remaining five woio pioKcd Up in a very exhausted condition. Until their rescue thoy mauagod to keop % thornbolvms nllut by clinging lo the thwarts and o.iih which had boon dislodged from ths boat, and occasionally gotiing h<)hl of tho bapsized boat itaolf. Tho following aro tho namos of the poor fellows who' porißhed :— Matthiw Hardwood,
from Lancashire, aged 35 ; •' Mick," late of Iho Dunedin Hotel, aged 30 years ; and "Dick," a boatman, of whom nothing is known further. We wonder when thi.s melancholy catalogue of death.*, thiougb tho disgraceful neg'ect of tho Gjvovmnent'iu not taking proper prec unions for the safety of travellers tossing this dangerous rivor, will bo closed.
