Two Buildings In Onehunga Destroyed In Spectacular Fire
AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).— A fierce and spectacular fire, believed to have been started deliberately by an intruder, swept through the Onehunga Joinery Works and an adjoining boardinghouse in Queen Street, Onehunga, on Saturday night. Firemen from five engines, aided by civilian volunteers, fought the outbreak for an hour and a-quarter before it was subdued. Two fire-lighters were slightly injured. The damage is estimated at about £25,000. Little was left of the joinery works after the blaze, but the brick walls. Awhitu House, next door, was a charred shell, except for one corner room, which was surprisingly little damaged. Practically nothing was saved from either building.
Just before the major outbreak, a fire lit in a nearby factory was put out by the brigade, and while the blaze was at its height, thefts took place from two nearby buildings.
