MAYORAL CANDIDATES RETURN THANKS FOR SUPPORT GIVEN THEM

After the final count in the Wanganui Mayoralty had been announced from the Drill Hall by the returning officer, Mr. C. R. White, Mr. Rogers (Labour), w>o has again been elected, and his opponent. Mr. A. C. Seivewright (Citizens) thanked electors over the loudspeaker system installed there. Fewer people had assembled outside the Drill Hall because of the wet night.

Mr. Rogers said that this was a happy moment for himself, his friends and supporters. The campaign had lasted only three weeks but had been a strenuous one. “I am glad to receive a further sentence of three years’ hard labour," said Mr. Rogers. "If spared, my entire energies will be devoted to my fellow citizens, as in the past.” Mr. Rogers thanked his committee and all who had assisted him during the campaign, and also the Labour Representation Committee which had worked particularly hard. "Mr. Seivewright has also worked hard and this has been a very clean campaign,” Mr. Rogers added. “The contest has been free from personalities. Mr. Seivewright must feel gratified with the support that he has had from a large number of citizens I must thank him for the clean manner in which he and those associated with him have conducted the campaign ” Mr. Seivewright also thanked his committee and all who had voted for him. This was the second time he had been defeated in the Wanganui Mayoral contest, but he made no excuses for his defeat and was happy to accept it.

"I can still help Wanganui in every way possible, and 1 assure Mr. Rogers of my support,” Mr, Seivewright added.
