SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.

Mrs M. Duckworth arrived from Hawera on Wednesday to spend a holiday in Wanganui. Mrs F. Deacon, leaves today for Wellington, and on Monday will travel by air to Invercargill for a two weeks’ holiday. Mrs R. N. Wilson, president, of the Y.W.C.A. and Miss E. W. Jebson, secretary are delegates appointed from the association to attend the National Board of the Y.W.C.A. to be held in Christchurch from October 10 to 12. They will leave Wanganui on Mondaj for the south. Mrs A. B. Currin, commandant of the Wanganui Rod Cross sub-centre, has left to attend the Red Cross conference which is to be held in Napier this week-end. Institutes throughout the Wanganui districts will be interested in the news that a presentation of a mahogany table was made to Mrs E. R. Sawer, who retired recently from the oflice of Dominion president of Women's Institutes. Members of the North Auckland Federation of W.l.s’ made the presentation. Mrs E. Butler, of Auckland, arrives in Wanganui today to attend the silver jubilee celebrations of the Wanganui Rebekah I odge to be held during the week-end, commencing with a banquet on Saturday evening. She wilt later visit Feilding and Wellington before returning north. While in Wanganui she will be the guest of Mrs A. E. Cummings, Niblett Street. Death of Violinist. The death occurred suddenly last Saturday of Miss Frances Kathleen Henry, one of Wellington’s well-known musicians. Daughter of the late Dr. C. D. Henry, of Lower Hutt, she was a member of the National Orchestra up to the time of her death. She and her sister Eudora, an accomplished 'cellist, visited England in 1936, and in the same year accepted engagements to play with orcestras in South Africa, visiting Durban and Johannesburg. Both sisters played in the first Wellington Symphony Orchestra. World Week For Animals. The Wanganui branch of the Vegetarian Society held the usual monthly meeting on Tuesday. This being animal week, an annual event, the talk was cn care and welfare of dumb animals nd their treatment in health and disease. In the absence of the president, Mr. F. Openshaw, the vicepresident was in the chair and introduced the speaker for the day who was Mr W. Harris, inspector for the S.P.C.A. In his talk Mr Harris touched on several improvements in the handling of bobby calves. He mentioned the improvements needed in the treatment of boner cows. The speaker 1 also stressed the need for improvement in the treatment of dogs on some backcountry farms. Mr. Harris gave instances of the great intelligence of dumb animals, especially dogs and horses. At tne clcse of the talk many questions were asked and information given on the care and feeding of domestic animals.

Westbourne Garden Circle. Sixteen members of the Westbourne Garden Circle met al the home of Mrs W. Wadham, Somme Parade this week. The convener, Mrs S. Copp presided. Mrs M. Vinten gave a demonstration on a fiorai cradle, a gift to be given to a mother in a maternity hospital. Members exchanged verses on garden lore and Mrs C Stilborn gave two readings from an English publication on "a day in the life of a country woman.” Two amusing competitions arranged by Mrs Chant were won by Mrs Wodley and Mrs Stewart. Enries in the com; etition for a basket made of twigs and filled with flowers were very good. The judges, Mrs Chant and Mrs Mclntyre gave awards to Mrs. Wadham 1, Mrs Stilborn 2, Mrs C |itwell 3. A vote cl thanks was accorded to the hcidess who was presented with a bouquet of stocks by Mrs Copp. Next month’s meeting will take place at Mrs Melmyre’s home in Papatu Street, and members will exchange plants. Women’s Bowling Club. On Saturday the Wanganui Women’s Bowling Club (inc.), held its opening and gala day. The president (Mrs Pluck), welcomed visitors, including Mrs Allen, president of the centre and bowlers from Castlecliff. She declared the green open and called on Mrs W. Raine to bowl the first kitty. The three stalls which were in charge of Mrs Newik (sweets ana cakes) Mrs Gren (produce), Mrs Pluck (fancy), and their assistants were well patronised. Afternoon tea was in the hands of Mrs Hawkins and helpers. Mrs Dixon and Miss Johnston had charge of the two novelty bowling events. The winners of the competitions were as follows:—Mesdames Tunbridge, Sullivan, Chew, Haggie and Watson, Miss J. O’Connor, Messrs. Benson, Tunbridge and Kalenberg. The afternon was a financial success. W’oVk-A-W’eek. • Busy Guides, Brownies and Rangers are this week trying to earn money to fill up their Work-a Week cards, and so help forward the Guide movement in New Zealand. To date numbers have met with success, and jobs undertaken, as well as usual household and gardening chores, including such work as cracking walnuts, making blouses (a Ranger’s task) gathering wood, playing with small children, going errands, and pegging out the washing, but one disappointed Brownie, after five calls, returned home without finding a willing employer. However, not to be discouraged, she was out another day on the quest to earn her share, dresed in her uniform and with her Brownie smile. To have a fitting function for the close of Work-a-Week, a film evening has been planned, to be hold in Christ Church Parish Hall tonight, commencing 7.45 p.m. Engagements FORD-SANSON.- -Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Sanson, Kohi, Waverley, wish to announce the engagement, of their only daughter, Maijorie Doreen, to Leonard Desmond, second son of Mr. L. M. Ford and the late Mrs. Ford, of Island Bay, Wellington.
