NATIONAL SALE OF BEEF BREED A SUCCESSFUL VENTURE
The inauguration of the national beef breeds sale at Feilding, was completely justified when Wright. Stephenson and Co. Ltd offered to a representative bench of buyers an extensive catalogue of stud and run sires and females of all the important beef breeds. This sale marked th< ’irst occasion on which Galioway cattle have been offered at public auction in the Dominion and the 18 month belted bull Mount Linton Moss (imported in Utero), born and reared on Mr. Noel McGregor's Mount Linton Station, Southland, excited keen competition. He eventually became the property of Mr lan S. Higgie, Wanganui, at 530 guineas. The underbidder Mr. Snodgrass. Te Awamutu, was not completely disappointed as the auctioneers were successful in arranging the private sale of another Beltie from the same breeder.
The complete dispersal of Mrs A. R. Newman’s “Arlington” Polled Shorthorn herd also made history, as it was the first dispersal of the breed to have taken place in the Dominion. These cattle met with keen competition and found purchasers as far south as Timaru, Mr. G. H. Squire was the purchaser of the top cow Arlington Flora 4th at 95 guineas. The matrons of this herd averaged 50 guineas and 2-year heifers 30 guineas. A representative entry of Hereford bu’ls made the satisfactory average al 801 guineas. Principal sales were as follows:—2-year bulls, account Mr. J. M. Irvine, Linton. 170gns. to Mr. Herbert Smith, North Auckland, and 42igns to Messrs. Stewart and Jones, Wanganui. Account Estate J. Goring Johnston, Waipawa: lOOgns. to W. Craig and Co., Wanganui, 70gns. to W. Craig and Co., Wanganui, 80gns. to W. Craig and Co Wanganui, lOOgns. io the O Neill family, Wanganui. Account D. G. Blair, Maxwell: 62igns. to S. and Co. Ltd., Taumaranui. Account Estate E. W. Barnett, Halcombe: lOOgns. to the French Government, Tahiti, 55gns. to C. Kirkley, Hastings.
Scotch Shorthorns were well represc-...., aau although offered a little early in the year for some breeders, the demand was keen and sustained, only one animal failing to reach the owners reserve. Sales in this section averaged 70gns. Account Mr. L. E. Harris, Napier: 2-year bull at 50gns, to Mr. K. D. Thompson, Te Araha, 75gns. to Mr. J. Coombe, Masterton, 70gns to Mr. E. C. Holmes, Masterton, 70gns. to W.S. and Co. Ltd., Wanganui, 50gns. to J. R. Northcott, Feilding. Account Mr. R. G. White, Maxwell: 2-year bull at 95gns. to Mr. E. N. Hare, Wanganui, 75gns. to W.S. and Co. Ltd.. Taumarunui. Account Mr Jas. Craig, Whangaehu: 2-year (Polled) at 40gns. to Messrs. Collins Bros., Wanganui, 40gns. to Collins Bros., Wanganui, 62Sgns. to Collins Bros., Wanganui, 78*gns. to Mr. G. Lampp, Marton, 52igns. to Messrs Grace Bros., Masterton.
A noticeable feature of this sale was the widespread buying power present, purchases being made by buyers from Dargaville in the Far North and Timaru in the South though most South Island buyers found prices above limits to which they have been accustomed. It is the intention of the auctioneers to develop this sale to include show classes of both stud and run animals of all beef breeds.
