HEALTH STAMPS

(~)NE of the most deserving objects directed to found and maintain the health of the community is the Health Stamp campaign, whereby people who use postage stamps can contribute in a simple way Io accomplish great good. It is interesting to look back upon the birth of the idea of the health stamp, or, as it was in the beginning, a Christinas seal, which originated in Denmark with the laudable object of helping families not able, through economic circumstance, to participate as fully as they should, in the good things of life. In some measure Wanganui can share with Denmark, some of the pioneering spirit. It was the Wanganui Education Board, when Dr. Elizabeth Gunn was medical officer of schools for the Department in this district, which supported the first children's health camp, located on “Anne Bank,” the property of Mr. Lethbridge. Turakina. It was not till many years later that the scheme of finance bared on the sale of health stamps was introduced. It provides a simple way of maintaining at Otaki a worthwhile service and Wanganui not only aids the general scheme, but participates in the good it accomplishes.
