Hawke's Bay Jockey Club Has Attractive Card For Opening Of Spring Meeting

Visiting stables are wvll rep parade at Hastings today for Ilie Jockey Club’s spring fixture, ant tests throughout.

Principal events today are 1h n Spring Handicap, and lhe l-’lying Handicap, on which Ihv totalisator double will be run. and in addition there is the Hastings Stakes, first juvenile “classic” of the season in this portion of the North Island. Though large fields provide a feature of today's card, divisions will be required in only one event., the Imperial Plate, whereas 12 months ago it was necessary to run the Hastings Slakes in two divisions. Carnegie was voted rather unlucky to be beaten in a close finish for the main race at Marton last Saturday, and he ap cars well forward Io run a good race today, even with 9.5. Kippo has hitherto reserved his best, efforts for the Wanganui track, and has been backed and beaten at Hastings, but on form he cannot be neglected. With Golden Spa likely to take on the open sprint and King’s Ransom scarcely back to his best form yet there will be a dispos’tion to favour the chances of Count Bian and Royal Bouquet. Count Bian was prominent at the recent Avondale meeting, finishing fourth in the Avondale Cup and second to Akbar in the Plumpton Handicap. On that form he is entitled to support. :.-»day. Royal Bouquet has run good races at Hastings and recently was three times placed at Riccarton, including a second to Biassed in the Winter Cup. Earldale shaped like an early improver at Marton. It is in his favour that he has shown a liking for the Hastings track, where he was a winner last season and also finished second to Wonder Bov in June.

Among the remainder good efforts may be forthcoming from Beau Beau Coeur, Conclusion (a previous winner at Hastings), Dark Flash. Coromandel and Dennis O’Kelly.

A preference is expressed for Earldale, with Carnegie and Royal Bouquet. as his most dangerous opponent. Voltaic, topweight in the Flying Handicap, may have lost some of his former brilliance, and the chances of Golden Spa will be preferred. Golden Spa proved among the top flight ot last season’s three-year-olds.

Diana Reynard has won at Hast' ings previously, and Kintamani would be dangerous if he could reproduce his early winter form. Statesman and Blue Spec are useful sprinters and Newsboy is capable of holding his own in strong company.

Though he has not raced since last January , Treneere makes a strong appeal, as he proved his ability in metropolitan company. Ptolemy has been off the scene since last Easter, but is a three-year-old who showed a good deal of promise last season. If a surprise is forthcoming it may come from Paper Spy, but Golden Spa, Ptolemy and Treneere are preferred. Half a dozen of those engaged in the Hastings Stakes have sported silk previously at totalisator meetings, but. some others have been seen in parades or at matinee meetings. Persian Gulf, a winner at Axondale, may be more forward than the majority. Fastnet finished fast into third place in the Debutant Stakes at Wanganui, where News Girl also showed possession of speed. Dalon was fourth at Marton last Saturday in the division won by Manitou. The available form suggests that Persian Gulf, Fastnet and News Girl may be prominent. Strong hack fields will contest the supporting events. The track is in splendid order and the going is expected to be ideal for this stage of
