INTEREST IN WINTER SPORTS WANING
One by one. Wanganui's winter sports are ending and sportsmen and sportswomen are showing more interest in training for the forthcoming summer season. Football boots, hockey sticks and table tennis bats are finding their way into retirement and the first tentative strokes are being made with tennis racquets, cricket bats and oars. Most summer sports clubs and associations in the city have already held their annual meetings, and set dates for the official opening of their seasons. One of the first sports 'to get under way is rowing. Faced with an early championship regatta this season, because of Canterbury Centennial regatta, local clubs have already begun the training of novices and the more experienced oarsmen are also out on the river. The Aramoho Boating Club has made arrangements to draw crews tor its first trophy race of the season, the Mitchell Shield, on Sunday, with the intention of beginning racing on October 9. On Sunday, also, a refresher course will be held for the panel ot coaches who volunteered their services at the annual meeting. Where possible, the club intends to have a coach for each crew in training this season. The Wanganui Rowing Club is not far behind Aramoho in its progress. Entries have been called for the Tesla Club Fours, to close next week, and a detailed schedule for the training of novices comes into effect on Monday. The Union Boat Club held its first committee meeting of the season last night, the season’s plans being discussed.
