CHECK ON CYCLES

“The cheek on a number of bicycles within the borough showed that there is room for improvement in the equipment of these cycles, especially the white rear patch and red reflector. Further checks will be made to ensure an improvement,” stated the traffic inspector, Mr. R. Peters, in his report to the Borough Council. FIKE PLUGS. The fact that some vehicles arc still parking over fire plugs has been noticed. With the present colour of the paint it is almost impossible for a person who knows the location of the plug to see it at night while parking between other angle parked vehicles, and it is correspondingly hard for a stranger to know that a plug is under his car. As this matte', ap/.ears io be causing some concern, 1 would suggest that the plugs be more clearly marked,” reported Mr. Peters. Gretna Fire Plug. The town clerk has reported to the Borough Council that he had discussed the question of parking over the lire plug at. the Gretna Hotel with, the traffic inspector. The inspector stated that he would be reluctant to lake proceedings against any offender as he considered that the tire plug was not well marked, especially at nights. He .stated that if anyone should park on either side of it, it is practically impossible to see the markings at night because of the shadow. He thought white distinguishing marks on the wall of the hotel might be of assistance. He also stated that, the majority of the offenders were visitors and prosecutions against them would not necessarily have the desired effect as visitors to Ihe hotel would in most cases not be aware that proceedings had taken place. Considerable discussion took place on what should be done. Kaka Road Extension. Gillett, who pointed out the reasons which caused a large amount of the soil to slip. This, he considered, was-mainly due to a seam of papa which was located a little under the top soil. He considered that to provide a low concrete wall about 4ft. in height running along ihe bank from the concrete wall already completed for approximately 22ft. was the best preventative against further slipping. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held later 1o discuss the matter, and it was decided to proceed with the construction of this wall. Renovations to Power House. The suggestion of the electrical engineer, Mr. W. J. Dellow, that some work should be done at the power house to provide a new floor for the portion where the gas engine stood, in order that the best possible use may be made of the building, has been considered by the Borough Council, which has requested that Mr. Dellow prepare a report, on the work required at the power house, and in conjunction with the borough foreman, he prepare an estimate of the cost.
