CRISES AT HOME AND ABROAD WILL WORRY PRESIDENT
WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 (Rec. 7 pm)—President Truman had a twin crisis on his hands today—a Cabinet controversy at home and a military predicament abroad, according to the Associated Press. There loomed at home a definite possibility that, the storm centre of the Cabinet quarrel, the Defence Secretary, Mr. Louis Johnson, would resign. In Korea, ■ American and other United Nations ' troops fought, desperately to hold the j massive continuing thrusts of North ■ Koreans in a war which, after 11 weeks, was still running against, the • defenders. There is not. any speculation in Washington now about when the general counter-offensive can be launched. The immediate pressing problem is to hold the line against, the enemy onslaught. All this was eftOerless news for Mr. Johnson’s friends, who thought that military victory in Korea now could ease the pressure for his resignation.
A White House informant. In pre dieting that Mr. Johnson was on the way out, traced the basic cause to a quarrel between Mr. Johnson and Mr. Acheson. The informant, said the President was concerned over reports of the Defence Department criticism of Mr. Acheson. “The President feels that Mr. Acheson has borne up in this case with dignity and will remain in the Cabinet after Mr. Johnson has gone.”
