Tribute To Britain’s Efforts To Effect Economic Stability

AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).— By increasing her industrial production by over five per cent, per man for every year since the war, Britain had laid the basis for complete eco* nomic recovery, said Mr. W. Calder Mackay, a member of Rotary International’s Aims and Objects Committee, on his return to Auckland tonight. After attending Ihe Rotary Convention in Chicago and the Rotary Assembly in Detroit, Mr. Mackay visited England and Western Germany.

He said that England’s annual productive increase was more than that of any other country, Sweden being the only other country in Europe which compared with her for industrial efficiency. “Britain is the only European country which is now earning a higher proportion of dollar exports than before the war,” said Mr. Mackay. “Industrial production is now 50 per cvnt. above 1938 levels aid this has been accomplished with industrial plant which, even today, dorjs not compare with what it was in 1938. In most, cases, British industry can lead the world both technically and in output per man and she can successfully compete in the world s markets,” Mr. Mackay added. 1 inink Britain’s industrial strength should encourage us to anticipate het future with hope and sober confidence.”
