TO AVOID FUEL CRISIS BRITAIN MUST HAVE MORE COAL MINED
LONDON, Sept. 5 (Recd. 6 pm).— A warning that unless the country’s coal stocks are built up during the next two months, Britain may face another fuel crisis this winter, was given to Durham miners by Mr. Alfred Robens, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Fuel. “We have eight weeks to go to the end of the summer and by that time we must have 16 500,000 tons of coal in stock or run the risk of a fuel crisis,” said Mr. Robens. “On Augus 19 our stocks were 12,800,000 tons. If production does not improve our exports will stiffer." The chairman of the National Coal Board. Lord Hyndley. has also appealed to the miners to sten up production and has asked all pit consultative committees to meet within the next fortnight in order to organise a production drive.
