WANGANUI REHAB. CARPENTRY TRAINING SCHOOL CLOSED
Opened in July, 1945, the Wanganui Rehabilitation carpentry training workshop closed recently. To the date of its closing, the school had completed the training of 142 exservicemen, while a further 50 are at present partly trained. The school’s trainees have erected a total of 96 State houses in Wanganui, comprising two in Maxwell Avenue, Durie Hill, six in Tanguru Street, Wanganui East, 18 in Brooking Street and 70 in the large housing settlement in Gonville. A further 45 houses are still under construction. Dictated by the lack of applicants, the closing of the school does not necessarily mean that training in carpentry is no longer available to di!>1 rict ex-servicemen. Single men Will bo trained in other centres where workshop courses are still being held and married men will be considered on their merits for “subsidised” training with local employers.
