CITY YORCHESTRA PLAYS AT IHE SACRED HEART CONVENT
As one of the activities of the Music School, the Wanganui City Orchestra played at the Sacred Heart Convent, St. John's Hill, last Sunday afternoon for Dr. Vernon Griffiths, his staff, and students, who are assembled in Wanganui. Assisting the orchestra were Mrs. Russell Scoular and Mr. D. Blight, who gate vocal solos, and Mr. William Trussell, who contributed several pianoforte compositions. The accompanists were Miss N. Gammin and Miss M. Blight.
Prior to the concert, Cr. G. P. Hawkins, as president of the orchestra- welcomed Dr. Griffiths and his staff, and said the city would benefit greatly by the presence of many notable musicians. At the conclusion of the entertainment, Dr. Griffiths thanked the Mother Superior and Sisters of the Convent lor placing the school hall at the disposal of the orchestra. He paid tribute to the conductor and members of the orchestra, stressing the value of such a body to the city. Dr. Griffiths said that in England and in some cities in the Dominion the civic authorities realised to the full the value of music and its culture to the community, and the civic authorities contributed to recognised musical bodies. The speaker referred to Wanganui musicians and mentioned Mr. W. Trussell, a lecturer of music at the Canterbury Training College, aqd Mr. B. Trussell, who is take up a similar appointment at Ardmore shortly. Mr. Frank Calloway supported Dr. Griffiths’ remarks.
