RAETIHI NEWS

Waimarino County Council Reporting to the council at the monthly meeting, the engineer (Mr. C. A. Gillett) staled that the period of fine weather synchronising with the arrival of earthwork equipment, several jobs that were outstanding were satisfactorily cleaned up. On the new road into the Raetihl soldiers' block settlement which is under construction for the Works Department, the earthworks—involving the shifting of some 1500 cubic yards —were completed and 279 yards of base and top-course metal was spread. On the old piece of road which formerly gave access to the Government vegetable garden, much earthwork was completed and the reconstruction has brought this up to county road standard. On the Ohura highway at the 7.3 mile, some 500 cubic yards were excavated at the eastern approach to Meyer’s bridge and this will enable a 'better turn for vehicles. The excavated material was carted to the 10.7 mile and used to complete the filling behind the retaining wall at that point. The Mangaeturoa Road, on which there will be heavy logging in the near future, was given a thorough overhauling and by arrangement with the sawmilling company concerned, 220 yards of crushed metal was spread at their expense. The main girders for the reconstruction of the Tokiahuru Stream bridge in the Karioi Riding were landed on the site, but further progress is not possible until the delivery of subsidiary steel. In the Ruatiti Riding, at the 61mile on the main road, the unstable tilling -—half bridged in 1908 —has now sunken far enough to expose the solid country and the completion of the bridge across the gut can now be put in hand. The total output of metal for the month was —pit and crushed—l7B3 yards. PERSONAL. Mr. Bert Pawson. who has been in charge of the Makotuku Timber Co.’s bush operations for close on 30 years, resigned his position with the company at the termination of last month. Mr Pawson sails on Friday next by the Rangitata on a six months’ holiday in England, and on returning he will take up his residence in Tauranga. NEW FIGURES ON LOCAL GOLF I,INKS.
