Taranaki, Too, Is Short Of Teachers

—To fill 48 teaching positions in its district, the Taranaki Education Board has 11 teachers, four of whom are retired teachers voluntarily returning. Five of the schools for which teachers I are required are sole teacher schools and unless the staff are found for them they are threatened with closure. “The position has never been worse” declared the secretary (Mr. R. M. Foggin) at a meeting of the board today. The senior inspector (Mr. A. H. Hoskins): Some might describe this as a big headache, but it is becoming a continuous nightmare. To end the difficulty the Education Department has again authorised earlier certification of probationary assistants but the board has no surplus of these and before probationers can be certificated teachers must be found from somewhere to take their places.
