TUG MAY BE ABLE TO LIFT WRECKAGE OF AIRCRAFT FROM SEA

CHRISTCHURCH, April 23. (PA).— The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s tug Lyttelton, which has a derrick and other lifting equipment, will sail from Lyttelton at midnight tonight to endeavour to lift the Harvard training aircraft which crashed into the sea off Birdlings Flat on Wednesday with two cadet pilots aboard. Investigations by the Lyttelton Harbour Board diver (Mr. H. Cornish) confirmed late yesterday afternoon that the object, lying 1200 yards from the shore was the missing aircraft. Air Force spokesmen said today that the plane was too far off shore to enable it to be hauled ashore from land yet was too close in to allow a heavy sea craft to get over the spot. Accordingly operations off Birdlings Flats were suspended today while discussions went on between the Air Force and Navy about the best means of lifting the aircraft. The tug Lyttelton will sail at midnight tonight and will endeavour to raise the aircraft in the morning. The habourmaster (Captain A. R. Champion) said this evening that the diver had put two or three lines round the plane but it was problematical whether the tug would be able to lift it. ,
