SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN VALUE OF BUILDING PERMITS ISSUED IN MARTON BOROUGH

Building permits for new dwellings and alterations to existing premises of a total value of £53,909, were issued by the Marton Borough Council for the year ending March 31, 1950, an increase of £17,703 on the previous year. 1 here were 26 new private houses built in the borough valued at £43,838 last financial year as against 18 valued at £29,900 for the corresponding period the previous year, while 44 permits for alterations and addiitions to private homes were issued by the Town Clerk totalling £5826, compared with 60 at March 31, 1949, valued at £4136. Fifteen permits valued at £4245 vyere issued by the council for alterations and additions to existing business premises, shops, etc., as against live permits worth £670 the previous financial year. No permits were issued for new premises for the period ending March 31, 1950, but three were issued the previous 12 months of a total value of £l5OO. The total permits issued for new buildings for the year numbered 26 valued at £43,838, compared with 21 valued at £31,400 for the previous year, while permits for alterations and additions to all types of buildings numbered 59, valued at £10,071, as against 65 worth £4806 for the year ended, March 31, 1949. ‘ FINES FOR AFTER-HOUR TRADING IN MARTON. While the licensee of the Marton White Hart Hotel was away on holiday, the Marton police paid a surprise visit to the hotel on the evening of April 14, and found a local resident at the bar drinking a glass of beer. fn the Marton Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, the licensee, George Charles Cray, pleaded guilty to selling liquor after hours and was fined £5 (costs 10s) while Walter Cecil Smith, who was in charge of the jfremises while the licensee and his wife were on holiday, was convicted and fined £5 (costs 10s), for supplying liquor after hours. On a charge of being found on licensed premises after hours, the local resident was convicted and fined £2 (costs 12s). Mr. K. A. Williams appeared for defendants Gray and Smith and pleaded guilty. Sergeant W. J. Brown conducted the case for the police. The sergeant said he visited the hotel at 6.35 p.m. on April 14 and found Smith behind the bar. He admitted serving liquor to the tnan found in the bar. Mr. Williams asked the court to take into consideration that both Mr. and Mrs. Gray were on their annual holiday and Smith was in charge of the premises. The licensee honestly believed that the requirements of the law would be fulfilled by Smith, said counsel. The magistrate, Mr. A. Coleman, noting that this was Gray's third conviction said he would take into consideration what counsel had said. The licensee, however, had a responsibility. ANZAC SERVICE AT ST. FRANCIS CHURCH Solemn Requiem Mass held at St. Francis' Church, Marton on Anzac Day drew a large congregation. A number of airmen from the RNZAF Station at Ohakea attended. The celebrant of the Mass was the Rev. Father Phillips, who preached an inspiring sermon, his text being: : “Greater love hath no man than this, I that he lay down his life for friends." The music of the Mass was sung in [Gregorian chant by the choir, while Handel's “Dead March" from “Saur was played by the organist, Miss Lydia Scott, at the conclusion of the service.
