Fines And Penalties For Traffic Breaches
Breaches of the traffic regulations occupied the attention of Mr A. Coleman, S.M., at. a sitting of the Marton Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. The Traffic Officer, Mr W. C. Shaw, prosecuted. While on patrol near Marton at 12.10 a.m. on February 2, Mr Shaw said his attention was drawn to a motor-cycle being ridden without lights by Hamilton Villiers Childe, an airman of Ohakea. When stopped defendant said_ that the lights had just gone out. Defendant was not unknown to the Transport Department, said Mr Shaw. Childe was convicted and fined £2 10s (costs 12s). Defendant was engaged in carrying passengers to the Wanganui Freezing Works, said Mr Shaw in prosecuting John Tyson Huia (Ratana) for having a wrong class of driver’s licence. Defendant was a competent driver but did not possess a driver’s licence to carry passengers. He was fined £1 (costs l’2s). For riding a motor-cycle through Turakina with no registration plate affixed to the rear of his motor-i?s«cle cost Royce Jackson Kipney (Wanganui) £1 (costs 10s). Mr Shaw said that the cycle was registered but carried no number plates. For failing to produce a driver’s licence defendant was fined £1 (costs 10s), and for having no warrant of fitness the fine was 10s (costs 10s). The cycle did not appear to be in good order, stated the traffic officer. On a charge of operating dh unregistered motor vehicle, Barney Rhodes (Greytown) was convicted and fined £2 (costs 10s). Mr Shaw said he stopped a motor-car drawing a trailer through Whangaehu. On the trailer was a boat and the driver was proceeding to New Plymouth. The trailer did not carry registration plates. Noel Rhodes (Rata) pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a vehicle with the wrong class of driver's licence. The defendant was riding a motorcycle at Turakina on his way to Wanganui when stopped by Mr Shaw. Rhodes did not have a licence to drive a motor-cycle. However, defendant had since been for a test and passed, said Mr Shaw. The magistrate imposed a fine of £1 (costs 12s). BASKETBALL SEASON TO OPEN WITH USUAL TOURNAMENT The 1950 basketball season will be launched in Marton on Saturday when ten local teams compete in the annual opening tournament. A less energetic programme than last year has been arranged by the division of teams into two sections, so that each team now plays four games to decide the finalists. Eight senior teams have norftinated for the club competition which com-1 mences on May 6, and in addition a junior competition comprising five 1 primary school teams will commence a series of friendly matches after tile school holidays. PERSONAL Mr E. B. Gordon, M.P. for Rangitikei, and Mrs Gordon, after a six weeks’ holiday spent in Australia an<! Tasmania, returned to tneir home in Marton on Tuesday. Mr and Mrs Gordon travelled to New Xsafrnd on the Wanganella. Mr Gordon lett last night for Wellington to attend a twoday Government caucus which opened this morning. OBITUARY. MR. WILLIAM DICKSON. The death occurred in Marton early last Friday morning of Mr. William Dickson, in his 74th. year. The late Mr. Dickson was the eldest son of Mr. John William Dickson, of Blenheim. Born at Wairau, Mr. Dickson came to the North Island at the age of 10 and worked in the Mangaweka, Hunterville and Halcombe districts before returning to his home town, where he married Miss Maude Player and then returned to the North Island. For some years he was engaged in the butchery trade in Patea and then came to Marton in 1901 to carry on his trade for W. Manning and Company, Head Bros, and W. Read after which he carried on in a butchery business on his own account. After selling this business, Mr. Dickson took up droving, where he was a notable personality throughout the Rangitikei and surrounding districts. He later started business as a general carrier in Marton but owing to illhealth had to relinquish this business, and lived a semi-retired life until about two years ago when his health further deteriorated and he was forced to give up work altogether. Since then ho has been practically confined to his bod. The high esteem in which the late Mr. Dickson was held was evident by the large number of flora) wreaths and messages of sympathy received by his family, and also the large gathering of his many friends who followed the cortege to the Mt. View cemetery last Sunday afternoon to pay their last respects to a prominent citizen. The late Mr. Dickson was predeceased by his wife 20 years ago, and he is survived by a family of four—one son, Mr. J. Dickson (Marton), and three daughters, Mesdames G. R. Dallas and J. A Fitzsimmons (Marton) and Mrs. J. Pedley (Wanganui).
