REPUBLICANS BRAND BILL AS SOCIALISTIC
WASHINGTON, March 23 (Recd. 7 p.m.)—President Truman's Administration suffered a major defeat today when the House of Representatives rejected the 2.000,000-dollar cooperative housing scheme. Mr. Truman telegraphed a plea from Key-West, Florida, for passage of the measure, which. provided for the creation of a Government corporation
to lend money at 3 per cent, interest to co-operatives and other non-profit organisations providing homes for families in the middle-income class. The Republicans branded the Bill as Socialistic. They said it would discriminate against ex-servicemen and others paying higher interest under other Government housing programmes. The Republicans were supported by the Southern Democrats in a 174 to 122 vote. The Senate rejected the proposal by 43 votes to 38 last week.—Reuter.
