UPPER HUTT COUNCIL REJECTS MAYOR’S MOTION TO DISMISS TOWN CLERK
WELLINGTON. Last Night (P.A.) —The Upper Hutt Borough Council early this morning rejected a motion by the Mayor, Mr. E. W. Nicolaus, "that the Town Clerk be dismissed.” The Mayor’s motion was defeated by six votes to two.
This information was given by Mr. Nico'aus today.
When asked to elaborate on the statement, issued after last night's council meeting, at which there was a public demonstration, he said the intention had been to dispense with the services of Mr. B. M. Wilmshurst as town clerk. The reason given was “accumulated loss of confidence in the town clerk.”
Commenting on the demonstration outside the Council Chambers last night, against the proposed dismissal, the Mayor said: “It was another of those stupid and rather shameless acts which the people of Upper Hutt will have to live down. It was the old crowd concentrating against me. They do it at every opportunity.” The Council meeting lasted till 3 o'clock this morning while the Mayor’s motion was debated.
