RANGIWAEA-BELL’S JUNCTION SPORTS

Successful Annual Gathering In a picturesque setting on Mr. F. Garmonsway’s property, the Rangi-waea-Bell’s Junction Sports Club held its annual sports meeting on Saturday. Rain in the early part of the morning undoubtedly affected the attendance, though the weather had cleared before the programme actually started and the bright sunshine of the afternoon was greatly appreciated by competitors and spectators alike. A comprehensive programme of events, including horse jumping competitions, children’s pony events, chopping and sawing, athletics, juvenile races and miscellaneous events, was presented in a manner which never allowed interest to flag, thanks to excellent organisation on the part of the committee under the able direction of the president, Mr. D. S. Livingston, and the secretary, Mr. H. Frew, and assistant secretary,, Mr. F. L. Whelan. The judge of the horse events, Mr. A. K. Overton, had a difficult task in deciding the winners, as the standard was particularly keen. The horse stewards were Messrs A. E. Samways, J. Bayne, R. Logan, C. Strachan, S. Spicer and J. Ayling. OPEN HUNTERS. The principal horse event—the open

hunters’ jump—was won by H. A. Hintz’s Typhoon, from Campbell Strachan’s Flight, with A. E. Samways' Jack third. The veteran horse of Mr. Samways won the ladies’ hunters’ jump, and was also placed third in the shepherds’ hack. For a horse in its 20th year this was a fine performance, and Mr. S.mways was heartily congratulated on his success. The first prize for the open hunters was £lO in cash and Messrs Collier Bros.* cup, valued at £lO 10s. S. Spicer’s Lady Bird carried off the honours In the open pony jump and won the first prize of £5 and Mr. D. S. Livingston’s cup. J. Marshall’s Dusty was second and A. E. Samways' True Blue third The cup for the maiden hunters' jump (presented by Mr. D. C. Strachan) went to C. Strachan’s Flight, while the cup for the best shepherd's hack (presented by Mr and Mrs. C. J. Rhodes) was won by A. E. Samways’ True Blue.

The chopping and sawjng events aroused great interest as usual, a large crowd gathering when these events were in progress . Mr. Linnel Cummings was in charge and acted as starter. He had as stewards Messrs Geo. James and R. Garmonsway. “BIG CHOP.”

The "big chop," the Rangiwaea handicap open chop, was won by M. Clinton, who carried off the first prize of £lO and the G. H. Peacock Memorial Challenge Cup. H. Frew was second and G. A. Campbell (off the Msec, mark) was third. Clinton, Frew and Campbell all performed creditably at the meeting and well deserved the success which came their way. Clinton was accorded an ovation on winning the main chopping event of the day. B. McCullough and S. Cashell won the local, and second-class chops, respectively. The first prize for the local chop was £4 and Frew Bros.’ cup valued at £5.

The teams’ event (sawing, standing and underhand chop) proved very popular with the crowd. The winners were G. A. Campbell, H. Gregory and R. Nicholas, with Frew Bros, and R. Garmonsway second. S. Cashell, T. Marsh and M. Clinton were first to finish, but were disqualified for a breach of the rules.

Great interest, was evinced In the ladies' sawing, the winners being Mrs G. A Camnbell and Miss Kate Keating. The men’s sawing resulted in a win for H. Gregory and C. Becker, who put up a particularly good performance.

Mr. Lindsay Bell was in charge of the athletic events. He was assisted by Mr. R. Cook and Mesdames D. Bell and D. C. Strachan.

The parking of cars was controlled by Mr. R. Bell, while Mr. D. Bell assisted with the secretarial work. The operation of a loud speaker system contributed greatly toward the smooth running of the sports. Mr. G. W. Horton was an excellent announcer. The athletic events and children’s races were keenly contested. Results are as follow: HORSE EVENTS.
