Companies Refuse To Meet Union In Washington (N.Z.P.A.—Copyright.) WASHINGTON, July 22 (Recd. 8 pm).—Seven Hawaiian stevedoring companies tonight rejected a proposal that they confer with the Interna* tional Longshoremen’s Union in Washington in an effort to settle the 82-days’-old Hawaiian waterfront strike. In a telegram to the Senate Labour Committee, which made the pr< al, the companies said they did not want to negotiate with the union president. Mr. Harry Bridges, personally. They addd that all negotiations should be conducted in Hawaii. Mr Bridges had agreed to a Washington meeting. The strikers are seeking a wage increase of 32 cents an hour and the companies have offered 14 cents.
