Single Harriers Again Too Good For The Married Men

Decided over a course of 41 miles, Ute race between the single and married members of the Marton Harrier Club held on Saturday afternoon was again won by the single men by nine points to 12. A similar race was last held three years ago and was also won by the single men.

Single men filled the first two places and the married the next three. Had Gordon Bromley been a starter to strengthen the married men the result might have been different. The Colts held a teams’ race over a course of 21 miles, the A team winning by 33 points to 45. MARTON RS.A. BALL NEXT MONTH. Arrangements for the first Marton R.S.A. ball to be held in the Marton Civic Theatre on Wednesday, Ju , were well in hand, said a member of the social committee yesterday. An energetic and capable ladies' committee had taken charge of the supper arrangements, he said, and the outcome of their activities promised to be a delight to everyone present. Decorations, under the direction of Miss Jean Stewart, will lend an enchantment to the scene that in itself should prove to be a prominent feature of the evening. The principal guests of the evening will be Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Burdekin, of Levin. Mr. Burdekin, who is Dominion vice-president of the N.Z. R.S.A., is particularly well known in R.S.A. circles, and the ball comnrfltee consider themselves favoured to have such a distinguished guest Three debutantes have so far notified the committee that they wish to make their curtsey, and the committee will be pleased to hear of any others. The debutantes will oe presented to Mr. and Mrs. Burdekin. HIGH SCHOOL’S PERFORMANCES Hay e been inconsistent. The performances of the Marton D.H. School team in the third grade (intermediate) section of the Rangitikei Rugby Union’s competitions have been rather inconsistent. High School began the season with a 55-nil victory over Bulls, but in the return game Bulls won 6-3. High School were then beaten by Hunterville 3-10, but in the next game at Hunterville, won easily by 21-6. Yet in the previous game Hunterville beat the leaders, Old Boys, 9-0, who were, up till then, undefeated. Therefore, it was to be expected that High School, judging from previous results, would defeat Old Boys at Marton on Saturday, but School just failed to rise to the occasion and Old Boys won 8-3. Territorially High School, especially in the second spell, had all the better of play, and it was only in the final ten minutes of play that Old Boys succeeded in making one of their rare incursions into the High School half. Good following up was rewarded with a try. High School early in the game showed their prowess by sweeping the field in several dangerous moves, but the centre, T. Knight, twice missed his pass when his winger had a clear road ahead. The Old Boys' backs worked as individuals on the few occasions they were on attack. Their backs were very quick up on the opposition and it was not until the ball reached the school centre that any ground was gained. Knight’s handling improved after the interval and he was a thorn in the opposition’s play. The Old Boys’ second five-eighths, P. Holtham, was very fast in his following up and scored both tries for his side. In the first five minutes of the game he caught the ball on the bounce and dived over for a good try. R. Kan scored for School and the spelt ended 3-all.' School made strenuaus efforts to take the lead in the second half, but a solid defence kept them out. Late in the game Holtham went over for his second t"y, which K. Poppe converted. The game ended: Old Bovs 8, High School 3. Mr. E. Boyd was the referee. BIG GALA WEEK-END AT RATA COMMENCES SATURDAY. Encouraged by the success which attended their efforts last year, the Rata Football Club has decided to hold another gala week-end, comprising a dance on Saturday night and three football matches on Sunday. The dance is being organised by the R.S.A and guests for the evening will be the Alton (Taranaki) football team which is to play Rata juniors the following day. These junior teams are to supply the first match, and is to be followed by the popular game between the Awapiini jockeys and a team selected from the third grade players in Rangitikei. The major attraction for the afternoon is the old-timers match between a combined Rata-Tat-hape team and Manawatu. After the matches there is to be a hangi dinner. The Hunterville Pipe Band will he In attendance to enliven the proceeding’ with a stirring programme. Altogether it should be a grand week-end at Rata.
