Strike Condemned By Mr. Chifley And N.S.W. Prime Minister

CANBERRA, June 20 (Recd. 10.20 pm).—“The decision to stage a general strike is wholly unreasonable, and an unjustifiable repudiation of conciliation and arbitration at a time when those processes are in actual course of effective functioning,” said the Prime Minister, Mr Chifley, and the Premier of New South Wales, Mr. McGirr, in a joint statement on the threatened coal strike. “The decision, if it is adhered to, will lead to mass unemployment for workers in many industries not immediately connected with the coalmining industry. It will inflict a great hardship and inconvenience on almost every member of the Australian community. The miners themselves will be heavily involved in Joss and inconvenience. “Let this be thoroughly understood. This dispute must finally be settled by a proper arbitral tribunal, and not otherwise. It is far better for all concerned that this be done sooner rather than later. “The Commonwealth Government is determined that industrial disputes shall be settled by processes of conciliation and arbitration. It believes, moreover, that

the majority of mining union workers favour this system. No threats or strike, however prolonged, will influence the Government's policy in this matter.’*
