Young Labourer Fined For Assaulting Police Sergeant
“It it had not been for your age and your previous good character, I would have imposed a term of imprisonment on you,” said Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when Barry Paul Harwood, labourer, aged 18 years, was charged with assaulting Sergeant Carlyon on January 16. Any assault on the police will be dealt with severely,” he added in fining accused £5. Sergeant L. Nicol said that Sergeant Carlyon was on duty in Victoria Avenue on Saturday, when his attention was drawn to a disturbance outside an hotel. Accused and his brother were attempting to fight, and a number of men were endeavouring to separate them. Accused had grabbed Sergeant Carlyon by the throat. To the magistrate, accused said his temper had got the better of him. Sergeant Nicol said accused was under the influence of liquor, but not sufficiently so as not to know what he was doing.
