Only One Person Of 39 Hurt When Bus Overturns Off Road
AUCKLAND, Last Night (PALOnly one of the 39 passengrs In a bus which left the road and overturned near Laingholm on Saturday evening received injuries serious enough to be treated in hospital. Thick tea-tree stopped tile vehicle from rolling further down a steep bank. Damage to the bus was slight and the driver had a remarkable escape from being seriously hurt. Mrs. Emma Louise Tunnicliffe, aged 72, of Laingholm, who was seated near the front of the bus, received lacerations to her scalp and right leg, and concussion. She was discharged from hospital today. Most of the other passengers suffered from bruises and shock.
The bus, owned by the Transport Bus Services and driven by Mr. J. T. Poole, was slowly climbing a hill between Wo6dlands and Laingholm on its way from the city. Its wheels slipped over the edge of an embankment and, after travelling for about its own length, the bus rolled over on its side and crashed against a stand of tea-tree. Mr. Poole had a narrow escape when a stout fence post pierced the door of the bus and stopped w’/.hln a few inches of his seat
Passengers got clear by breaking the back windows and the window at the front. Very little structural damage and no mechanical damage to the vehicle was caused.
