COMMUNISTS RESUME SHELLING OF CITY OF TIENTSIN

NANKING, Jan. 14 (Recd. 7 pm).— Hopes for early negotiated peace were dispelled yesterday, when Communist artillery in the eastern and western suburbs of Tientsin opened up a heavy bombardment. The city shook for three hours under the impact of the barrage. At least 56 are dead.

Major operations continued at Tangku and around Peiping. The Nationalists are reported to be meeting Communist attacks in Peiping with armoured cars, infantry and artillery, all supported by the air force.—Reuter.
