Jet Fighter Climbs Two Miles In One Minute

LONDON, Jan. 13.—The Society of British Aircraft Constructors announces that an experimental Beryl Meteor, a twin-jet fighter, climbed to a height of 7i miles in 7* minutes. In the first minute it climbed two miles, and in H minutes it was nearly three miles high and it took only three minutes to climb five miles

The society states that the performance gives assurance that Britain is not only resolved to reduce the advantage of 600 miles an hour bombers which are about to go into service with many air forces, including the Royal Air Force, but also has the technical skill to do it. Climbs better than those of the Beryl Meteor have hitherto been possible only with rocket-propelled aircraft. An American aircraft, the Bell X-l, recently reached 23,000 feet in 100 seconds. The Beryl is not one of Britain’s newest op most powerful turbo-jets. Experts believe that with the use of newer and still more powerful jet engines British fighters will be able to equal the climb rate of the Bell rocket plane. The Bell has fuel for only two and a-half minutes of powered flight. The jet fighter can fly for several hours.

TOKIO, Jan. 10 The Emperor visited General MacArthur and remained two hours. Japanese official sources described it as a New Year courtesv visit.
