Communists Pushing On In China Battle

SHANGHAI, Nov. 30 (Rec. 8 p.m.) Combined forces of the Communist Generals Chenyi and Liupocheng cleared an important obstacle in their drive on Pengu when they captured Kucheng, a strategic railtown midway between Suhsien and Penupu, state pro-Government press reports The Communists also creased the Kwei River at several points. Fighting of “unparalleled ferocity’’ is reported to be raging west, north, and east of Sinchiao, only 18 miles north of Fengpu. Meanwhile, the Nationalist Generals have deployed the troops immediately northward of Fengpu for a decisive battle against the advancing Communists, whose strength is semiofficially estimated at 11 armies, about 220,000 men. Although Nanking has officially denied that the Government is contemplating evacuation of Hsuchow, independent Chinese reports today state that 100,000 Nationalist troops are driving southward from Hsuchow towards Suhsien. The object of the operation is believed to be to draw off the Communist strength in the Pengpu area and relieve the pressure of Communist spearheads advancing down both sides of the Hsuchow- ' Nanking railway.
