Ordeal For French Star

The first film made in Britain by lovely Edwige Feuillere was a series of ordeals for 'her. Frightened by horses since her arm was bitten by one as a child, she rode gamely beside co-star Stewart Grange r in “Woman Hater.” Mlle. Feuillere also overcame her fear of large dogs when playing scenes with two 1401 b championship hull mastiffs. Worst of the ordeals was being repeatedly thrown into a lake. Edwige has always been terrified of water. She cannot swim. • • • Take Note Boys. It’s the lad with a touch of shyness in his make-up who makes the biggest hit with the ladies. That’s a tip to the boys from Hollywood's AllAmerican Girl, Esther Williams. The star made her interesting observation on the set of M.G.M.’s “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” after a scene in which she stages a row with Betty Garrett to determine which of them will stroll down the street with Frank Sinatra. “And that’s as if should be,” remarked Miss Williams. “I’ve always contended the shy retiring sort of a guy has more charm than the aggressive male.” Singing Star To Study.

Instead of vacation next year. Jane Powell will pass twelve weeks in Italy studying music. The singing star has twelve free weeks each year under her M.G.M. contract and had hoped to go abroad this year, but her stage engagement in “The Student Prince’’ cancelled her plans. Nothing, however, will be allowed to interfere next year, she hopes. Miss Powell, who stars in “A Date With Judy” and “Luxury Liner,” expects to study piano, voice culture and also opera technique, the latter at the famous La Scala in Milan.

Donna Reed and Alan Ladd will be teamed for a second time when they step on to Paramount sound stages to begin their co-starring roles in the suspenseful melodrama, “One Women.” The talented screen pair recently completed the romantic leads in the soon-to-be-released West Point drama, “Beyond Glory.” In “One Woman” Miss Reed gets the most dramatic role of her career as Rosita Jean D’Ur, whose past is unfolded by Ladd. Ladd, on the other hand, is set to portray a newspailer reporter who investigates each of the fifty-four names listed in Miss Reeds address book—then puts the pieces together and draws an accurate portrait of her character. Anniversary Trip.

Kathryn Grayson and Johnie Johnston will pass their first anniversary at Carmel, California, the scene of their wedding. They intend to travel by car, covering the same route as their wedding journey. Miss Grayson has recently completed her role in the Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s “The Kissing Bandit.”

To Produce Now Film. Louis de Rochemont has left for New York by train after getting the green light to start production on the first of an accepted series of true life dramas, which he will produce in semi-documentary form for M.G.M. His initial production effort for M.G.M. will be W. L. White's sensational “Lost Boundary,” the true story of a New England Negro doctor and his family who passed the racial line to be accepted as whites. De Rochemont produced the semi-docu-mentaries “House On 92nd Street,” “13 Rue Madelaine” and “Boomerang.”
