Items For Theatre-Goers COMPOSERS SHOW INTEREST IN WRITING MUSIC FOR FILMS
“Background music,” a score specifically written to fit a film is an integral part of the script, a vital link in the technical assembly of a movie in which the composer takes his place as a member of a film-producing unit, states the British writer John Hunt ley.
It calls for a composer who has a keen interest in films, a strong sense of the dramatic in music, and the ability to write music spontaneously and to the strict discipline of a stop-watch. He must be prepared to give and take with the other technical departments of film-making; to their requirements the music must be orchestrated, balanced and recorded to to fit the scenarist’s dialogue, the quality of the actor's voice or the use of natural sound, while elsewhere it must dominate the screen Vaughan Williams has said that “the film contains potentialities for the combination of all the arts such as Wagner never dreamt of,” and judging by the number of eminent men who How claim a strong liking for film scoring, this may be very true.
When you see a film you should not
be conscious of the music as a separate entity, but if i is a good score, your enjoyment, of the film will be greatly increased. If you are interested in film music and want to make a study of it pick your films carefully, reject the mediocre productions, and concentrate on good stuff. See the really top-notch films more than once; study the credit titles and you will soon get to know the names of the composers as well as those of the stars. The best way by far to study film music is at the cinema. The music was designed that wav and its whole existence is bound up with the visoal impressions. It is as much a part of the film as the sound photography and the acting. Movie music must be judged first and fore-most in its correct context, judged by its suitability to the visuals of which it is related.
