THE SARJEANT GALLERY
Sir,—Your congratulations to the Sarjeant Gallery on arranging live exhibitions in the forthcoming nine months draws attention to the fact that very little has occurred at this Gallery during the past ha f-year. Is the forthcoming change due to alterations in the control of the gallery, or to the chance happening that these exhibitiohs are coming to New Zealand and the Ga.lery simply is taking its turn? What I want to get at is; what initiative has been displayed by those in control of the Gallery to use it in accordance with the objective of the donor? The accidental run of exhibitions is not necessarily ground fot your congratulations. Further, who sees to the hanging of the exhibits when they do get there —I am, etc. PHIDIAS. The three exhibitions to be held in the Gallery during the current six months have become available through separate agencies. Th? Gallery Committee could not undertake to arrange for such exhibitions at the Sarjeant Gal'ery save by joining with other institutions in a Dominion-wide effort. The hanging of tne mciures is the work of a sub-committee of the Gallery Committee, whose task It is io supervise the hanging of itinerant exhibits and the permanent co'lection. —Editor.
