Rain Interrupts Play In The Second Cricket Test

England Lost Compton Early; Score 141 For Six At Break

Received 1 a.m. LONDON. June 29 Rain interrupted play at Lords at 12.30 p.m. in the second cricket test and at that time England, in its second innings, with no hope of a win but striving to play out time and earn a draw, were six wickets down for 141 runs.

Compton, who was regarded as Enpland’s only hope to gain a draw, was dismissed early before he could add to his overnight score of 29. Yardley came on and fell to Toshack, who was on his game as a bowler. Then Coxon fell l.b.w. to Toshack without opening his score. When rain interrupted play. Evans and Dollery were together. Dollery, who was 37, was the only Englishman to look like a batsman this morning. ENGLAND’S ONLY HOPE A DRAW Bradman, declaring soon after lunch at seven wickets for 460 left England needing 596 for a win, with only nine hours of batting left. Thus England had no alternative to dogged defence in the hope of taking the test to a draw. Miller, Brown and Lindwall hit out freely today and 117 runs were added to Australia’s total in 88 minutes’ batting. Miller scored freely yesterday morning, while Brown made a polished contribution to the partnership. Mille- had a life at 58 when he was dropped on the boundary. , A heavy shower delayed the resumption after lunch and made the bowler’s foothold precarious. Finally Coxon dismissed Brown who had batted for 75 minutes. Miller hit five fours and a six before he was caught. As soon as Lindwall's bright innings ended, Bradman declared the innings closed. Rain again held up the start of England’s innings. Hutton was dropped before he had scored by Lindwall in the slips off Johnston’s bowling. Both Johnston and Lindwall made deliveries fiy from the soft pitch and kept Washbrook and Hutton ducking and dodging. Hutton was dismissed when he mistimed a cut and sent the bail chest high to Johnson at first slip. Toshack relieved Lindwall and was immediately successful as Edrich was also caught at first slip.

Washbrook, in his longest stay at the wickets in this test series, reached 37 before he was caught at the wicket off a full toss. Compton and Dollery both made shaky starts but later gained confidence and batted in grand style. Details: —
