Ray Robinson Retains His Welterweight Crown
Recd. 7 55 p.m. Chicago, June 28. Ray Robinson, 146Mbs., successfully defended his world welterweight title in a blistering 15-round bout against Bernard Docusen, of New Orleans, 14511b5. The two judges and the referee were unanimous in giving a points decis>n to Robinson. The titleholder who was forced to reduce eight pounds in as many days to make the weight limit, punched with precision and speed. In the first four rounds Docusen gamely withstood the champion’s superior attack. Without breaking ground, Docusen traded punches with Robinson and stayed on top of him until the tenth, The challenger then lost ground in a furious exchange. In the eleventh round Robinson dropped the challenger with a left hook to the chin. Docusen struggled up at the count of nine, but ran into a volley ot blows. Robinson, however, was so leg weary and tired that he was unable to finish Docusen, who made an amazing recovery and fought back gamely until the end.
■ The attendance was estimated at 45,000. This is probably Robinson’s last fight as a welterweight. He will now seek Tony Zales’ middleweight crown.
