He was admitted to the Wanganui Hospital, where his condition was later reported to be comfortable. Government “Super” Car.

One of the Government’s recently imported "super” American cars parked in front of a city hotel yesterday was a source of much interest during the iunch hour. Driven by a Railways Department driver, this "super eight” was being used to conduct a party of members of the Midland Bank in England on their gqpdwill tour of New Zealand. Although some of the new Government cars have been seen in Wanganui during Ministerial visits, this was the first occasion a model of this particular type has been seen in the city.

Able Statesman. “In the United States Thomas Dewey, who has won nomination as Republican candidate for the Presidency, is regarded as an able statesman and fearless leader,” said Colonel Marshall, of the Salvation Army, in a talk to the Wanganui Rotary Club yesterday. As Governor of New York State, he began a vigorous and efficient regime, he added Mr. Dewey was first brought into the public eye by his campaign against the New York underworld as District Attorney from 1933 onward.

First Solo I light. After less than four hours’ dual instruction, Mr. C. Williams recently made his first solo flight at the Wanganui Airport. Mr. Williams, who is a Taihape school toacher, was instructed by the Wanganui Aero Club’s instructor, Mr. G. A. Delves. The club's Tiger Moth ZK-AJK was to have been flown to Auckland on Monday for inspection for the renewal of its certificate of airworthiness, but the flight was delayed by adverse weather. The weather north of Wanganui yesterday was unsuitable for light aircraft, and the flight will be made today.

Alterations to Theatre. The work of removing the old verandah around the Majestic Theatre was begun yesterday, rhe verandah was recently condemned by the Wanganui City Council, which notified the owners of the building that it had to be removed. A permit has been granted for the provision of a new entrance to the*theatre from Victoria Avenue and certain other modifications, and this work will be carried out when the verandah is removed. The modifications to the theatre will take several months to carry out, but will not affect the screening of pictures. The provision of a new entrance was approved by the building controller some months ago, when the theatre's fire escapes were altered to meet the requirements of the Wanganui City Council, but was later withdrawn.

Accountancy Students. The application of the theory of accountancy was the subject of an address to members of the Wanganui Accountant Students’ Society on Monday by Mr. H C. Veitch,, F.R.A.N.Z.. of Wellington, who was formerly an accountancy instructorin Wanganui. He said that accounting consisted of the application ol principles, and it was difficult to distinguish between theory and practice. In their courses, students should try to gain a faculty of analysing and interpreting accounts. He advised that the law subjects should be regarded in their correct sphere as a guide to an accountant and not as a basis for legal opinions. The examinations of the New Zealand Society of Accountants was rightly of a difference standard and the syllabus was practical in its nature.
