Clothing From Gonville Receives Warm Welcome In Germany
Prisoners of war returning to Germany from Russia were often in rags and with broken boots, says a British Red Cross welfare officer, Lila Retallack, writing in appreciation of a case of men s clothing sent by the Gonville Red Cross“We are always so thankful to get men’s clothing that I want to send you a special message of thanks,” she writes. The special need was largely caused by the returning prisoners of war. It was impossible to supply all their needs, but if the Red Cross could give even two or three garments it was ot some help. “The German authorities work hard to help these men, but their resources are terribly limited and they sometimes feel quite desperate because they can do so little. Often, too, the men who return from Russian captivity ar’e in a very bad state of health, physically and mentally, the
letter adds. “The German Red Cross and other bodies provide convalescent homes where you can. You can well imagine the difficulties over buildings, equipment, etc., and we give what help we can with clothes, bedclothes, games, etc. We only wish we had more to give.”
