Catering At Races Under Criticism By Visitor To Wanganui

The following letter to the Editor of the "Chronicle” concerning the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter race meeting, held on June 5 and 7, has been received for publication:—

Sir, —As a visitor to your town I feel it my duty to write in protest over the unsatisfactory way in which the morning and afternoon tea arrangements were carried out at the recent races. As a visitor to many courses I don’t think I have seen such conditions under which people have to push and shove for a cup of tea. The tables were piled five and six deep with dirty cups and saucers, on chairs and under your feet, and, in fact, outside on the ground. Surely better conditions could be provided by’ the racing committee, who are enjoying record gate takings, in the way of providing decent clean buildings as is done in other towns. Also the service and the eatables left much to be desired. The doors had to be continually closed and inquiries for milk and nies before 3 p.m. were met with the information “No more.” The public would not mind paying sixpence for a good cup of tea, but when one gets a cold one with the tea leaves floating around the top then it is certainly time something was done. I would like to suggest that before another meeting is held here committee members travel and see what is done in other towns, such as Hawera and New Plymouth, for instance, and make better provision here. If a large marquee with tables and tablecloths were provided it would add much to the pleasantness of the day. If some improvement could be effected, I feel sure the public would respond and appreciate it.— I am, etc. "VISITOR.”
