Australia All Out For 350 In The First Innings

TALLON'S GREAT HALF CENTURY; UNPREDICTABLE TOSHACK (N.Z.P.A.—Copyright.)

Receivevd 12.15 a.tn. LONDON. June 25 Australia continued its first innings this morning in the second test at Lords. They carried the overnight score, 258 for seven, to 350 before Johnston lost his wicket to a smart stumping by Evans.

The feature of the play this morning was the fine batting stand by Tallon, who made 53. Toshack, the last man in, the unpredictable Toshack, hit hard at anything loose and was not out 20, when the last wicket fell

Australia made 92 runs in an hour and ten minutes this morning and reached a higher total than was expected. Washbrook and Hutton opening for England in the first innings. When the score was at 17 Washbrook was caught at the wicket by Tallon off Lindwall. Edrich joined Hutton and the score was carried to 25 before lunch.

Brown batted 85 minutes yesterday for 24, Hassett 175 minutes for 47, and Lan Johnson 45 minutes lor four. Morris, on the contrary, scored freely and attractively after he had weathered the first hour when the wicket, still drying after a soaking in the storm two days ago, was really difficult. His Irst 50 took 130 minutes but he made the last 45 in even time with powerful, beautifully-timed shots all round the wicket.. Barnes’s dismissal for his second successive duck in Bedser’s second over was a disastrous start and Bradman was again called on to play the part of opening batsman. The crowd of more than 30,000 broke into a spontaneous roar of triumph as Barnes turned a shortish ball from Coxon easily into Hutton's hands, just behind square leg. Another roar was quickly throttled when Bradman, playing forward, was beaten by the first ball, which trickled off the inside edge of his bat. Coxon was swinging the ball dangerously each way in the early overs. Bedser and Coxon each bowled to a leg trap and they concentrated on Bradman’s leg stump. With three men in a circle four or live yards from the bat neither Bradman nor Morris was happy against the openers.. Bedser’s eleventh and last over of the opening spell very nearly brought BrVdman’s dismissal. Bradman, then 13, repeated his fatal leg glance, but the ball slipped through Hutton’s hands. Morris pulled the first ball from Wright into the crowd for six and collected 11 from the over. Bradman and Morris were more confident against the slow bowlers and, despite frequent bowling changes survived to lunch, when the score was 82 for one. BRADMAN TRAPPED. After lunch Bradman, for the fourth time in his last five innings and for the third successive time in Tests, fell into a leg trap. It was a most unBradmanlike innings. As soon as Hassett had settled in, Morris opened his shoulders and made 30 in fine style. He lingered awhile in the nineties, then two magnificent offdrives to the boundary made him 101. Five minutes later he mishit a ball to Hutton in the gully. Morris batted for 207 minutes arid hit 14 fours and a six. He joined the select few who have made a century in a first Test match at Lords. . MILLER FAILS AGAIN. Miller’s run of batting failures continued. He scratched uncomfortably for five minutes and was then out

l,b.w. to a ball which he made no attempt to playBrown, going in at an awkward time for the side, faced the situation with his customary calm’, but scored only two in 25 minutes. The inflexibly accurate attack pegged both batsmVn in their creases. Hassett had a life at 40, when dropped in the slips by Edrich, off Wright. Seven runs later he was bowled by a yorker. Brown, after a slow, cartful knock, was out leg-before. lan Johnson was at the wickets for half an hour before he sedred. Tallon was far more confident and was batting well at stumps.
