VICE-REGAL. An enthusiastic reception was accorded His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., when he visited Thames today. He was accompanied by Lieutenant D. Loram, R.N. His Excellency was met by the Mayor, Mr. S. Ensor, Mr. F- C. Tuck, Town Clerk, the chairmen of local bodies, the R.S.A.. Maori representatives, and their wives, and was tendered an official luncheon. Other functions included an inspection and address to a Targe gathering of primary and secondary school pupils, Scouts and Guides, a civic reception at the theatre, and a visit to the hospital. His Excellency departed later for Auckland.

Air Commodore S, Wallingford returned to New Zealand yesterdy after studying the latest tactical developments and attending the Imperial defence conference called by Field Marshal Montgomery. Air Commodore Wallingford is returning to Air Department and expects to be Air Member for Personnel.—(P.A.) The Minister of Education (Mr. McCombs) today announced the appointment of Mr. A. J. Waghorn, M.A., as principal of the Wellington Training College, vice Mr. F. C. Lopdell. Mr. Waghorn has been vicepresident since 1941. Mr. E. W. Benton (“New Zealand Herald”) has been elected chairman of this year’s Parliamentary Press Gallery, and Mr. G. S- Roydhouse (Press Association) viee-ohahrnan.
