The following players have been selected from the Wanganui Rugby Union area to take part in a Rugby trial match for the New Zealand Maori team at Palmerston North next Wednesday: D. McCarthy (Taihape), M. W. Tupaea (Taihape) and D. Waitford (Wanganui River). An old boy of the Wanganui Technical College. D. McCarthy has represented the Wanganui Rugby Union in several matches. Of robust build, he has played with success both as full-back and five-eighth. In 1946 he played in the Wanganui-Manawatu combined team against the Australians in Wanganui. Last year McCarthy played full-back in the New Zealand Maori team, and acquitted himself with credit. He plays for the Huia team in Taihape. A sound cricketer, he has represented both Wanganui and Taihape at the summer pastime. M. W Tupaea is a team mate of D. McCarthy and plays for the Huia Club at Taihape. He was a member of the Wanganui-Manawatu team combined side which played against Australia in Wanganui in 1946. He represented Wanganui last season and was in the New Zealand Maori team which toured the Dominion last year. He is a hard-working forward. D. Waitford is a member of an upriver Maori team.
