Former Wanganui Boxing Champion In Town

An interested spectator at the professional boxing contest at the Wanganui Opera House last night between Colin Honey and Tommy Downes, was the former Wanganui heavyweight boxing champion, E. Young, who, in his Wanganui days, was a star pupil of T. P. Souter’s boxing school. During his professional career he fought Tom Heeney -at Tokomaru Bay in February. 1926. Two years later the redoubtable Tom Heeney fought Gene Tunney in a title bout for the world heavyweight crown. When in Wanganui Ern Young plaved for Wanganui and Old Boys and is a former Wanganui Rugby representative player. Tom Heeney was resident in Wanganui round about 1922 and played for the Kaierau Club. Young is now living in Christchurch.
