SPARE PART FANCIED IN SOUTH
Among the distance '.performers at the Southland Racing ’ 'Cluo’fr New Year meeting Spare Part, was outstanding. He beat the opposition going away in the Invercargill Cup. 12& furlongs in race-record time, and on the second day he came up ‘?etter than ever and simply played with the field in the Southland Handicap, 10 furlongs, after running the las. halfmile in 48 2-ssec. Before lea /mg Icr Trentham the Salmagundi geldirg ran the last mile of a mile and aquarter with 10.0 on his bac.c in 1*47 2-5. This was a particularly good gallop as it took place 33 feet out from the rails and in going that was shifting after some rain. Spare Part has now won it his last four and is undoubtedly the most promising young handicap performer seen down Invercargill way for some time. He 5s a powarful bigstriding four-year-old and is a trueblue stayer. Providing he has the services of a strong lig ilweight he should more than hold his own in the select company that will oppose him in the Wellington Cup, and with K. Ford in the saddle he should jack nothing in horsemansni •>. Wantwood, a staoleiaa-.e of Spare Part, turned on a fine performance to run second to Nigger Lad in the open mile on the first day at Invercargill. Nigger Lad equalled the Southland track record of 1.39, and Wantwood was finisr.j’g on strongly after getting none the best of the running. He missed the jump-out cn the second day and was never dangerous; but the racing has ‘sharpened him up and he will be right back to the brilliant form he showed at Riccarton when he is produced at Trentham. L. J. Ellis will ride Wantwood in his Trentham engagements.
