BOYS FRUSTRATED IN ATTEMPT SAIL SMALL YACHT IN OPEN SEA
(P.A.) Christchurch Jan. 16 An attempt by two boys, aged about 14 or 15 years to set out from Lyttelton on Thursday on a sailing trip to Akaroa in an Idle Along clast sailing boat was frustrated by official ban. One of the Harbour Board’s pilots noticed that the boat was heavily laden with camping gear and provisions, and when he questioned the boys he was told that they were setting out for Akaroa. The Idle Along boat is only 12ft. Bin. long, but the boys apparently considered it safe for the 45mile trip in the open sea. The pilot had no power to forbid them to leave, but reported the matter to the local office of the Marine Department. By the time an official from the department had returned with the pilot, the boys had set out. The two officials in a launch caught up with the boat and the boys were ordered to return to the boat harbour.
