JUNIOR NATIONAL PARTY A .round of entertainments arranged by the Marton Junior National Party, should keep members busy tor the next few weeks. An invitation has been extended to the branch to attend a rally to be held at Oamaru on King’s Day weekend. Those wishing to make the trip are asked to advise the secretary, Miss M. Caithness, before May 15. The Marton branch lias also received an invitation to attend the Wanganui branch’s dance, to be held in St. Joseph’s Hall, Wanganui, on Friday, May 16. The annual dinner for the branch is to be held in the Marton Lounge tearooms on Thursday, May 29. This is to be followed by a dance in the Tutaenui Hall. Those intending to attend are reminded to advise the treasurer, Miss M. Rhodes, before May 22. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING Although the attendance was not large at the ladies’ weekly, shoot on the Marton miniature rifle range on Thursday night, the standard ol shooting was good. Top score for the evening was Mrs. D. Anderson with 114, other scores being Miss E. Hall 111, Miss M. Higginson 100, Miss A. Rankin 100, Miss J. Foote 100. The next evening for ladies will be held on Thursday, May 15, when it is hoped to have a larger attendance. MANY HOCKEY PLAYERS NOT CONVERSANT WITH RULES The need for hockey teams to appoint coaches was stressed by Mr. VV. G. Aitken at the annual meeting ot the Rangitikei Hockey Umpires' Association held in Marton. His experience oi umpiring had shown that several of the players were ignorant of the rules, if all teams possessed coaches who could school their players in the rules ot the games, it wouid be for the betterment ot hockey, he said. it was pointed out by Miss M. Wilkie that some coaches who were ; umpires were not in favour ot officiating in games in wmen their own teams were engaged and had lequested that they be l relieved ot Ihtir umpire duties. It was explained that 12 umpires were required each Saturday ana as there was not a surfeit ot umpires, such a request could not oe approved. A recommendation was made to the Women’s Hockey Association that times set down for the commencement of matches be strictly adhered to. It was pointed out mat some clubs were arranging their own times without consulting the umpires. Officials for the season were elected as follow: Patron, Mr. W. G. Aitken; president, Miss M. N. Webb, A. E. Grade, F. M. Henderson, Mrs. C. M. Gainey and Miss M. Harvey. INTEREST ON WAR GRATUITY The postmaster, Mr. G. E. Mitchell, advises that holders ot war service gratuity accounts in the Marlon Post Office could submit their books for interest and bonuses. Interest would also be added to Post Office savings accounts. PONY CLUB RALLY With the start of the school holidays arrangements are being made to hold several pony dub rallies in the district. Members of the South Makirikiri Club are to hold a rally on the property of Mr. F. McLean on Tuesday. LOCAL BOXER’S SUCCESS AT FEILDING. Only one Marton boxer attended the Feilding Boxing Association’s tournament held on Saturday night. He was Vic. Simcox from Mr. O. E. Gibbon's gymnasium. Simcox fought Hill from Levin, who lasted only three-quarters of the first round, w.ien the referee stopped the bout and declared the Manon lad the .winner. Simcox also was awarded the trophy for the most scientific boxer at the tourney. NATIONAL SAVINGS With only live weeks gone in the linancial year, National Savings in Marton have exceeded the weekly quotas for tlie period by £7724. The postmaster, Mr. G. E. Mitchell, stated ; tliat savings to date totalled £9224, savings for the week ending May 3 being £1283 and for the weeK ending April 25, £1371. COMING EVENTS.
