WANGANUI RUGBY LEAGUE
WIN FOR ARAMOHO AND CITY CLUBS In the first series of games in the senior Wanganui Rugby League competition, played on the Wanganui East Showgrounds on Saturday, Aramoho defeated Eastern Suburbs 13-b, and City defeated Gonville 10-5. In view of the forthcoming representative fixture players were on their mettle and a fairly large crowd was appreciative of an improved display oi the code. ARAMOHO v. EASTERN SUBURBS In the early match it was only after the change-over at half-time that Aramoho displayed their superiority. Prominent amongst the Aramoho forwards were Tasker and Skelsey, while Downs and 'tonga were |he mainstay of the backs, eastern Suburbs’ pacK was ably led by Benson and McCormick. Gilroy and Jones, who was playing under a handicap due to injury, were prominent in vhe backs. Although Aramoho thoroughly deserved their win on the day s play it is fully expected tnat Eastern Suburbs will cause an u*.>et in the competition before many weeks are past. For Aramoho tries were scored by Tonga, Skelsey and Sturzaker and Downes kicked two penalties. For Eastern Suburbs, McCormick scored a try and Urlich kicked a penalty. The teams were:— Aramoho: Downes, Mullans, Tasker, Skelsey, Butcher, Stone, Eyers, R. Filer, Tonga, Edwards, Sturzuker, Brett and Upchurch. Eastern Suourbs: Scott, Roydhouse, McCormick, Urlich, Gilroy, Olsen, White, Benson, Harris, Vicke.vs, Jones, Schmidt, Tonkin. CITY v. GONVILLE In the later game, City had the advantage ot the sun in the first hall, and from the kick-off went straight to the attack. After holding the territorial advantage for some time, Massey burst through to hand on to Boyd, to Martin, and with a clever reverse pass back to Boyd, who scored in a handy position lor Harrison to convert. Stung by the reverse, Gonville pushed through to the attack. City forwards, in their over keenness, were off-side and Matson goaled with a magnificent kick from the sideline. Both teams maintained the pace after half-time and alter Tapua burst his way through the ruck ne scored wide out. Matson failed to convert and, with the score 5-all both teams played with a will. At this stage City’s superior combination appeared to have the advantage. Martin cut through the Gonville defence to hand on to Massey, who scored under the posts lor Harrison to convert. The teams were: City: Wilcox, Massey, Boyd, Fyfe, Corlorth, Newport, H. Martin, Harrison, Andersen, Hopa, R. Martin, Ngatoa, Butler. Gonville: Barton, Bott, Waitai, Davis, T. McGrail, Gilbert, Tapua, Nixon, Jury, Davis, Whakarua, Matson, P. McGrail. Referee: Mr. Hartly. DRAW FOR NEXT WEEK 1.30 p.m.: Gonville Rovers v. East-, ern Suouros.
