“PLEASE EXPLAIN” NEW TENNIS COURTS

Kaiwaka, May 9. An explanation of the Kaiwaka Tennis Club's action in putting down three new concrete tennis courts has been sought by tlie Building Controller. Covering an area 139 ft long by 114 ft wide, the courts, which are surfaced with ashphalt. are situated adjacent to the State highway just north of the township on a piece or land donated to the club by a local resident, Mr. J. A. McLean. They were in use for the first time on Saturday when basketball matches were played on them. The president of the club, Mr. T. G. Bowmar. said in an interview that about 25 tons of cement had been used (or making the foundation for the courts An application for a permit had been refused last spring, but the club thought it had been in order in buying the cement through proper channels when the restrictions had been temporarily lifted before ChristMr. Bowmar said a grant of £<X) toward the cost of makinz the courts had been received from the Minister of Physical Welfare and Recreation, Mr. Parry, who had mentioned it was for concrete courts. A further £lOO had lieen contributed by the Kaiwaka Centennial Committee and other | money had been raised by subscriptions and the sale of debentures lhe total cost woul I lie between £4OO and £5OO. Up to 20 men had done the work voluntarily under the supervision of Mr. J. Powell, of Maungaturoto.
