AT WOODVILLE

MODERATE REPEATS STEEPLES WIN CAPRONELLA SURPRISES Following early fog there was brilliant sunshine for the Woodville winter meeting and there was a very large attendance. The totalisator handled £48,580, compared with £44,726 last year, the increase being £.3854. The course was in splendid order and the going was easy. An effort to win the Hopeland Hurdles all the way by Glen Urquhart just failed when Mary Lee, hard ridden, caught him on the post. The winner may turn out to be another ot the useful Illumination breed. St. Hilton, always well placed, was a length away, third, ahead of Sniro, Gunman, and Rockanui. The iasinamed made a job of the second to last, fence when going fairly well Hard riding got Beau Or home a fraction in front of II Corona in the Novice Plate No. 1. Il Corona had most of the pace, and it was not till the last few yards that Beau Or got the upper hand, to win by half a head. Il Corona was two lengths In front of False Step, with Revelate, who came from a long way back, next. MODERATE GETS THERE Hard riding from the last fence home, and the fact that High Morale stopped to a walk over the final 100 yards, enabled Moderate to win the Mangarawa Steeplechase. His fencing had not been too good, but. his superior staying power pulled him through. Gay Rouen went out at the first fence to Skyhawk, who showed a distinct dislike for brush fences, went over the wing at the second of the double and dropped his rider. Light Tea was a poor third, ahead of Cuisinier, who had enough half a mile from home. CAPRONELLA AT ODDS Taking charge once they were in a line for home, Capronella won the May Handicap with three lengths to spare, but for the minor placings there was a battle royal, half-heads separating Silver Rod, Sheilwyn and Longsword. Had the last-named got clear earlier he would have been much more prominent. As it was he was compelled to pull out from the fence to get a run and he finished wide out on the track. Hormuz went poorly. After allowing Dickens, Village Girl and Desert Chant to take turns in the lead In the Novice Plate No. 2, Molly Adair came through once in line and went on to win by two lengths from Shenandoah, with Incision half a length away third. Valliere was a poor fourth. RHODESIA AU THE WAY Well served at. the start, Rhodesia outstayed Lady Nahleen in the Telegraph Handicap, winning by a short neck. Sir Boswell showed early speed, with Rhodesia, Lady Nahleen and Trig Point handy, while Lord Theio was back in the middle of the field. Rhodesia and Lady Nahleen sorted themselves out at the distance and the former just hhd eniugh in hand to stave off the mare. Cooraclarc came with a rattle, to be a neck further away, with Lord Theio, Trig Point and Hadrian next to arrive. Drawing clear on the turn, aftei allowing Te Akl to make the pace, Currency Lass won the Mangapapa Handicap l?y just over a length. Evenlight, always in the front bunch, beat Joe’s Cobber, also well placed all the way. Aristea was running on in fourth place, ahead of Culloden Moor, Registrar and Our Jock. In a fighting finish Pram just hell off Master Gary in the Victoria Handicap. Patu Ra and Earnbridge were the pacemakers, the former giving in at the home turn. Earnbridge fought, on, but was not capable of doing the I last bit and also succumbed to Black-1 water, two lengths behind Master Gary. Fifth was Lord Bradbury, fol-1 lowed by Patu Ra and Court Judge. Details of results:— HOPELANDS HURDLES HANDICAP (Of £350; 1 mile 5 furlongs.) 3/2 — Mary Lee, 9.0, R. J.
